Power expressions and Examples

 

1. a one-on-one with someone - a private meeting or conversation between two people

    (국문 설명) 일대일 만남

    → (예문)  The school counselor called Tyler's mom in for a one-on-one about his behavior.

★ create one-on-one time with your baby 아기와 단둘이 보낼 수 있는 시간이 된다

2. a fraction of something - a small portion of something

    (국문 설명) ~의 일부

    → (예문) Tim succeeded in soccer despite having only a fraction of the the talent of his teammates.

 

 

3. prove oneself - to show one's ability

    (국문 설명) 능력을 입증하다, 능력이 있음을 행동으로 보여 주다

    → (예문) If you really want to prove yourself, stop complaining and work harder.

<Power practice>

 

1. 록산느는 저조한 성적에 대해 이야기하기 위해 교장 선생님과 일대일로 만났다. (a one-on-one with someone)

쫑쫑의 영작: 록산느 met a one-on-one with the principal to hold a conversation about his poor performance.

Correction: Roxanne had a one-on-one with the principal to discuss her poor grades. (쫑쫑: 어맛! 여자 이름이었군요.)

 

2. 나는 몇 달 지난 중고차를 사서 새 차 가격보다 적게 지불했다. (a fraction of something)

쫑쫑의 영작: I paid a fraction of the price of a new car because I bought a used car that passed several months.

Correction: I paid a fraction of the price of a new car by buying a used one a few months later. (쫑쫑: 이거 국문이랑 좀.. 안 맞는 영작이 아닌가.. 싶은 생각이 들어요... 정답 영어 문장은 '내가' 몇 달 후에 샀다는 의미이고 제시된 국어 문장은 중고차 자체가 몇 달 지났다는 의미인 것 같거든요. 이 문장 영작할 때 생각이 많았었는데.. 음.. 그런데 또 생각해 보니 맞는 것도 같고 :) 여러분은 어떻게 생각하시나요?

 

오랜만에 영작 후 파파고도 돌려봤네요.

 

3. 젊은 소방관은 불타는 건물에서 두 사람을 구하면서 자신의 능력을 증명했다. (prove oneself)

쫑쫑의 영작: The young firefighter proved himself when he saved two people from the burning building.

Correction: The young fireman proved himself when he saved two people from a burning building.

※ 아기다리고기다리(아 기다리고 기다리던) 원어민님 첨삭입니다. 

No.2-If you say you bought a used car that passed several months, you are saying that this car is several months old whereas the answer states that a used car was bought a few months later. (쫑쫑: 네, 어떻게 보면 참 희한한 얘기인 것 같아요. 어차피 중고차라는 게 시간이나 세월을 보냈다는 의미인데.. 혼자 보냈느냐 전 주인에 의해 보냈느냐 하는 문제는 있지만요. :)

The difference between your answer is that you bought a used car that is old which in other words doesn't make sense because the car is already a used car, why does it have to be several months old when it's already a used car? Your answer was a little weird and repetitive in a way that states "Used car" (쫑쫑: 맞아요. 국어문장이 헷갈려서 영작하는데 난감했거든요. ㅎㅎㅎ)

 

and "Passed several months".

Hence, if you are opting for a better or an alternative answer, you can write this way:

I paid a fraction of the price of a new car because I bought a used car/a secondhand car.
