Power expressions and Examples

 

1. drop everything - to stop whatever one is doing

    (국문 설명) 열 일 제치다

    → (예문)  When my wife went into labor, I dropped everything at work and went to the hospital.

 

2. work one's way through something - to complete a task in an ordered way

    (국문 설명) (특히 시간/노력이 많이 드는 일을) 처음부터 끝까지 다 하다

    → (예문) As I worked my way through the textbook, I began to understand math much better.

 

3. hold back - to not say or do everything what one wants

    (국문 설명) 망설이다, (~을) 말하지 않다; 저지하다, 억제하다

    → (예문) When I realized I failed the exam, I could barely hold back my tears.

 


 

<Power practice>

 

1. 내 여자 친구는 나에게 전화할 때마다 내가 모든 것을 제쳐 놓기를 바란다. (drop everything)

쫑쫑의 영작: My girlfriend wants me to drop everything whenever I call her.

Correction: My girlfriend expects me to drop everything whenever she calls me. (쫑쫑: 오.. 그녀가 전화하는거였네요.. ㅎㅎㅎ)

 

2. 어려운 프로젝트라는 건 알지만, 열심히 차근차근 해내야 해요. 그렇지 않으면 마감일을 못 맞출거예요. (work one's way through something)

쫑쫑의 영작: I know the project is difficult, but you should work your way through it. If not, you will not able to meet the duedate.

Correction: I know it's a difficult project, but you have to work your way through it or you'll miss the deadline. (쫑쫑: 뭔가 더 간결함이 느껴지네요.)

 

due date 미국식 [명사] (특히 지불) 만기일
due date  중요[명사] [두운: D-D] 만기일, (출산)예정일

 

3. 내 드레스에 대한 너의 솔직한 의견을 듣고 싶으니까, 주저하지 말고 말해 줬으면 해. (hold back)

쫑쫑의 영작: I would like to hear your honest opinion about my dress, so don't hold back your words.

Correction: I want your honest opinion on my dress, and I don't want you to hold back.
