Power expressions and Examples

 

1. mess with something - to be careless with something

    (국문 설명) ~을 건드리다, 방해하다

    → (예문)  The young boys were messing with a hornet's nest by throwing rocks at it.

 

2. err on the side of caution - to be more careful than seems necessary

    (국문 설명) 지나치게 조심하다

    → (예문) We should err on the side of caution and leave for the airport three hours early.

 

3. best/worst-case scenario - the most/least desirable outcome

    (국문 설명) 최고의/최악의 경우[시나리오]

    → (예문) Miles prepared for the worst-case scenario and nailed boards over the windows.

 


 

<Power practice>

 

1. 나 오늘 기분이 안 좋으니까 건들지 마. (mess with something)

쫑쫑의 영작: Don't mess with anything for me. I am in mood today.

Correction: Please don't mess me today because I'm not in a good mood.

 

2. 우리는 만에 하나를 대비해 일몰 몇 시간 전에 텐트를 쳤다. (err on the side of caution)

쫑쫑의 영작: We set a tent several hours before sunset to err on the side of caution.

Correction: We erred on the side of caution and set up our tent hours before sunset.

 

3. 가장 좋은 시나리오는 우리가 결혼식 딱 하루 전에 도착하는 거야. (best/worst-case scenario)

쫑쫑의 영작: The best-case scenario is that we arrive one day before the wedding.

Correction: The best-case scenario is we arrive only one day before the wedding.
