Power expressions and Examples

 

1. cooped up - restricted to a small space for a length of time

    (좁은 곳에 갇혀 있는)

    → (예문)  After nine hours cooped up on a plane, it felt good to stretch our legs.

 

2. more bang for one's buck - greater value for the amount of money spent

    (가격 대비 높은 가치)

    → (예문) To get more bang for your buck, wait for sales or buy in bulk.

 

3. put a dent in something - to reduce one's supply of something

    (~을 줄이다)

    → (예문) Those kids put a dent in the food we bought for the weekend.

 


 

<Power practice>

 

1. 허리케인이 닥쳤을 때 200명의 사람들이 고등학교 지하실에 갇혀 있었다. (cooped up)

쫑쫑의 영작: When the hurricane barged, 200 people were cooped up in the basement of the high school.

Correction: During the hurricane, 200 people were cooped up in the basement of the high school.

 

2. 항공권을 살 때 나는 항공사 마일리지를 사용해 저렴하게 구매한다. (more bang for one's buck)

쫑쫑의 영작: I get more bang for my buck using air points when I buy an airplane ticket.

Correction: I get more bang for my buck by using airline miles when buying my ticket.

 

3. TV 광고로 인해 우리의 마케팅 예산이 줄어들었다. (put a dent in something)

쫑쫑의 영작: We put a dent in the marketing budget because of the TV advertisement.

Correction: TV advertising put a dent in our marketing budget.
