Power expressions and Examples

 

1. a lifesaver - someone or something that provides help at a crucial moment

    (국문 설명) 생명의 은인

    → (예문)  A stranger at the airport was a real lifesaver when he let me use his phone after mine died.

 

2. a build-up of something - a gradual gathering of something in a certain area

    (국문 설명) ~이 축적된[쌓인] 것

    → (예문) The underside of the car has a build-up of rust.

 

3. pick up on something - to detect or notice something

    (국문 설명) ~을 알아내다, 감지하다

    → (예문) The police picked up on the man's suspicious behavior.

 


 

<Power practice>

 

1. 캠핑 여행 때 성냥이 모두 젖어서 톰의 라이터가 생명의 은인이 되었다. (a lifesaver)

쫑쫑의 영작: All matches were wet during the camping, so Tom's ligher became a lifesaver.

Correction:Tom's lighter turned into a lifesaver on the camping trip when all the matches got wet.

 

2. 배수관 주변에 낙엽과 나뭇가지가 쌓여 있었다. (a build-up of something)

쫑쫑의 영작: The 배수관 has a build-up of fallen leaves and branches.

Correction: There was a build-up of leaves and sticks around the drainpipe.

 

3. 딸아이가 모든 걸 눈치채서 아내과 나는 딸 앞에서 다투지 못한다. (pick up on something)

쫑쫑의 영작: My wife and I can't fight each other in front of my daughter because she picks up on everything.

Correction: My wife and I can't argue in front of our daughter because she picks up on everything.
