Power expressions and Examples

 

1. go into detail - to explain every aspect of something

    (국문 설명) 자세히 이야기하다

    → (예문)  I can't go into detail about the case, but we have enough evidence to convict her.

 

2. in a nutshell - in summary

    (국문 설명) 요약하면, 간단히 말해서

    → (예문) In a nutshell, the market is falling because of inflation fears.

 

3. pass up - to disregard or ignore something

    (국문 설명) (기회 등을) 거절하다, 포기하다, 놓치다

    → (예문) I wouldn't pass up a chance to go on a date with Becky.

 


 

<Power practice>

 

1. 다큐멘터리가 좀 더 자세했으면 좋겠는데, 2시간밖에 안 돼. (go into detail)

쫑쫑의 영작: I wanted the documentary to go into detail, but it runs only 2 hours.

Correction: I wish the documentary went into more detail, but it's only two hours long.

 

2. 간단히 말해서, 정전으로 인해 우리는 손실된 생산 시간에 5만 달러의 비용이 발생했다. (in a nutshell)

쫑쫑의 영작: In a nutshell, the lost production time due to the blackout cost us $50,000.

Correction: In a nutshell, the power outage has cost us $50,000 in lost production time.

 

black out(잠시) 의식을 잃다 (→관련 명사는 blackout), (=faint)
blackout 미국∙영국 [ˈblækaʊt]  영국식 

1. [명사] 정전(停電)
2. [명사] (정부·경찰에 의한) 보도 통제[정지]
3. [명사][특히 英] 등화관제

 

3. 질은 승진하면 댈러스로 이주해야 하기 때문에 승진을 포기했다. (pass up)
