Power expressions and Examples

 

1. fill in for someone - to substitute for someone  

    (국문 설명) ~를 대신하다

    → (예문)  If you want to take tomorrow off work, you need to find someone to fill in for you.

 

2. step up - to take on additional responsibilities

    (국문 설명) 나서다, 책임을 맡다

    → (예문) When the head chef got sick, his assistant stepped up and ran the kitchen.

 

3. leave someone high and dry - to leave someone in a difficult situation

    (국문 설명) ~를 어려운 상황에 처하게 두다

    → (예문) I was forced to leave Jack high and dry because he refused my help.

 


 

<Power practice>

 

1. 내 상사는 케이트가 병원에 입원해 있어서 내가 사무실에서 그녀 대신 일을 해야 한다고 했다. (fill in for someone)

쫑쫑의 영작: My boss told me to fill in for Kate in the office because she was in hospital.

Correction: My boss said I have to fill in for Kate at the office because she's in the hospital.

 

2. 타고난 리더인 메리는 항상 팀을 위해 나서곤 했다. (step up)

쫑쫑의 영작: The innate leader Mary would step up for her team all the time.

Correction: As a natural leader, Mary would always step up for her team.

 

3. 어젯밤에 당신이 우리 딸을 데리러 가는 걸 잊었을 때, 나를 혼자 두고 가 버렸다는 걸 믿을 수가 없어. (leave someone high and dry)

쫑쫑의 영작: I couldn't believe you left me high and dry when you forgot that you had to pick up our daughter last night.

Correction: I can't believe you left me high and dry last night when you forgot to pick up our daughter. (쫑쫑: 이렇게 간단하게 쓸 수 있는 것을.. :)
