Power expressions and Examples

 

1. in good/bad shape - in a good/bad condition

    (좋은/나쁜 상태인)

    → (예문)  That car is in really bad shape.

 

2. set off from somewhere - to depart from a place

    (~에서 출발하다)

    → (예문) The whales set off from Alaska on their 6,000-mile migration to Mexico.

 

3. pay tribute to someone/something - to publicly show admiration for a person or thing

    (~에게 경의를 표하다)

    → (예문) It pays tribute to the first president of the country and the positive changes he made.

 


 

<Power practice>

 

1. 이 중고 자전거는 상태가 아주 좋군요. 얼마를 원하세요? (in good/bad shape)

쫑쫑의 영작: This secondhand bike is in good shape. How much do you want?

Correction: This used bike is in pretty good shape. How much do you want for it?

 

2. 우리는 기점에서 출발하여 5일간의 하이킹 여행을 시작했다. (set off from somewhere)

쫑쫑의 영작: We set off from the startpoint for a 5-day hiking.

Correction: We set off from the trailhead and began our five-day hiking trip.

 

3. 내 새 책은 제2차 세계 대전 때 여간호사들이 한 일에 경의를 표한다. (pay tribute to someone/something)

쫑쫑의 영작: My new book pays tribute to what the female nurses did during the World War II.

Correction: My new book pays tribute to the work of the female nurses of World War II.
